Stephen Martin received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from Central Michigan University, where his principal instructor was David Gillingham. He earned Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Autin, where he studied composition with Kevin Puts, and Yevgeniy Sharlat.

We Go On, for solo marimba/percussion
Reflections of a Lost Soul, for solo vibraphone, and six percussionists
Opus Zero, for five percussionists
Eli; of the Earth, for cello and piano

Alone, for unaccompanied alto saxophone

His alto saxaphone solo, Alone, was premiered by Drew Whiting in 2006 at the North American Saxophone Conference, and subsequently performed at the 2006 World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia.
